On Kanye

A Kanye West Sunday Service

On Kanye…

“Hands On”

What have you been hearin’ from the Christians?
They’ll be the first one to judge me
Make it feel like nobody love me
Make you feel alone in the dark and you’ll never see the light…
I can feel it when I write, point of livin’ in the right
If they only see the wrongs, never listen to the songs
Just to listen is a fight, but you booked me for the fight
It’s so hard to get along if they only see the slight
From the love of religion
What have you been hearin’ from the Christians?
They’ll be the first one to judge me
Make it seem like nobody love me
I’m not tryna lead you to Visas
But if I try to lead you to Jesus
We get called halfway believers

So… I am not here as a Kanye groupie. I am not here defending everything that Kanye says and does.  I am here as someone who is keenly aware of the judgement and paranoia of the church at large.  Kanye aptly says in this song, “Hands On”, the the first ones to judge him will be the Christians… To make him feel like nobody loves him, to be called “half way” believers.

This is the aspect that I am focusing on.

Funny thing is, there was a time in my Christian life that I would have been that Christian.  Pointing the finger, accusing a Kanye West of grandstanding his  “faith”. Judging the genuineness of his heart.

I don’t believe this is what we are called to at all as Christians.  We are clearly called to love our neighbor as ourselves. So why do we as believers so often take a judgmental posture towards anyone who doesn’t believe the way we do, or agree with our particular church doctrine etc. This is the kind of thing that gives the Christian church a bad rep. We should respond with conviction… how am I loving my neighbor, who I may not agree with?

So before you start saying, “well Bill, aren’t you now judging the church?  Aren’t you just like the ones you are accusing?”

Maybe… but we are told to judge all things rightly.  Using discernment. Prideful, paranoid judgement is not righteous, discerning judgement.

How about praying for Kanye?  How about rejoicing when one sinner is saved?  How about “putting away the pointing finger and speaking wickedness?”

1 Corinthians 1:27 New International Version (NIV)

27 But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise…

1 Cor. 5
12 What business is it of mine to judge those outside the church? Are you not to judge those inside?

I’ll leave the last word for you.

BH/ These are my opinions. I do not claim to be the authority.  The Lord Jesus Christ is my judge.  I will stand before Him.
