Faith Under Pressure – James 1

2-4 “Consider it a sheer gift, friends, when tests and challenges come at you from all sides. You know that under pressure, your faith-life is forced into the open and shows its true colors. So don’t try to get out of anything prematurely. Let it do its work so you become mature and well-developed, not deficient in any way.”

I don’t know about you, but I usually don’t count it all joy when I am losing my patience!!

In fact, initially, I am the opposite.  But I do know the Truth.  But in order for the Truth to set me free to be patient, I need to surrender whatever is making me impatient to God.  I “know” this, but I continually need to “KNOW,” this… in a deeper and deeper place.  Then I have my peace back.

So here’s what happened tonight.  We went out to dinner, at a restaurant on the pier here in San Clemente.  Dinner was great, we were thanking God for all His blessings, our health, each other, the beautiful place we live. Then the waitress took the check with my card.

As she walked away, the card slipped out of the folder and landed right in one of the gaps in the pier decking. Yes.  That’s right… can’t make this stuff up.  It goes down into the water… nonetheless the manager goes below the restaurant to look for it.  In the mean time my phone will not call out to the bank so I can cancel the card.

The manager comes back with the bad news… can’t find it… but we’ll pay for your meal.  Yay!  But… I am now anxious about not being able to cancel the card.  Look how fast my gratitude goes out the window.  Get in the car trying to no luck.  Pull the car over agitated.  Use Stephs phone to call.  Banker asks me for the number of the card I just told him I lost… (am I missing something here?)

Finally get through and get it done.  Feel better about that, but lost patience, edgy with my wife … peace and fun factor dropped 85%.  Try to redeem it all with her and go look for a light up palm tree for outside… (yes we have them here.) Hehehehehehe….

Don’t have any…. let’s go home .  Sit on hold with T-mobile 20 minutes waiting for rep to help fix my stupid phone.  All the while, God is speaking to my heart… Bill…. I got this…. and while we’re at it… I have got all the other issues that you have been concerned about today and even for a few weeks now.

I start listening…. finally. Peace returns.  Feel stupid, but grateful again.  So I figured I would make myself accountable with you all.  I always tell people I learn the most from my failures and lapses.  Here was one for all of us to learn from… “He’s got this.”
